Role of biomass in grid balancing

for: IEA Bioenergy, VTT Finland

[Mar – Dec 2016]

In an international project team, the role of biomass energy for grid balancing was investigated. Given the expected increasing share of renewable sources for the production of renewable electricity, and in particular the share of variable sources (wind and solar energy), biomass energy can, like hydropower, help to balance the grid operation.

Information on the report can be found at this page of the IEA Bioenergy website.

At a IEA Bioenergy Executive Committee meeting the topic of biomass and grid balancing was discussed in a workshop. A summiry of the results is found here.
